An idea for a short film

Is it proper netiquette to post an idea for a film? Is it feeding my own fantasies to publish this? Eh. Hardly anyone reads this blog, anyway.

The Crow
(A short film)


Scene I:

[Setting: College apartment, with three bedrooms. One room is occupied by a student studying. All quiet.

A leaf falls outside, pausing on the window sill, before falling to the ground.

Another student unlocks the door and walks in, dropping his bag of books on the floor, then putting his hands on his face, clutching at a subsiding headache. Noticing that he didn't completely close the door, he turns around and pushes it shut.

As the student walks into the kitchen, dust on the radiator comes into focus, as the wind in his wake lifts a bit of lint, which soon settles. First a pot clanks in the background, then the hiss of gas and the clicking of the lighter on the stovepot. Rice grains quickly fill a glass cup, then crash into the pan. The refrigerator door opens.

The studying student comes into focus as he turns a page and glances out the window. Following his gaze, a crow returning his gaze comes into view, then flies off.]


Scene II:

[Setting: The student who was cooking is finishing a plate of fried potatoes, an closed textbook next to him, a mostly drained glass of water, with ice cubes, in front of him. Sunlight streams into the room. As the student pushes the bones from a chicken quarter away to capture the last bits of potato and a shred of lettuce with his fork, the studying student walks out of his room and toward the kitchen.]

Studying student: "Hey," he begins, glancing outside at leaves and budding flowers pressing against the window. "I, umm..."

Eating student: "Yeah?" Chewing and swallowing, before poking his tongue out to grab a bit of food from the side of his mouth, then quickly dabbing the wet spot with his forefinger.

Studying student: [Breaking into a smile and looking down] "I'd like to take Nat out." [pausing and looking up at the Eating student].

Eating student: [Raising his eyebrows at first then settling into an easy smile, looking at the studying student while reaching over for the textbook.] "It's been, what? Four months? Or five? I'm fine with that."

[Eating student's hands find the textbook and pull it toward him, his left forearm pushing the plate and glass away.]


Scene III

[Eating student emerges from the bathroom and walks up to a sink of dirty dishes in the kitchen. He takes a wad of paper towels, wets it, and proceeds over to the table, to wipe it down. It's dark outside. As he begins, Studying student opens the door and enters the apartment. Eating student pauses and looks up.]

Eating student [from the background]: "So, how did it go?"

Studying student [face flustered, breathing elevated, but smiling, as he walks over and stands at the entrance of his room]: "She wanted me to kiss her. I told her...well, I told her I wasn't going to ask her out again." [A slight sneer begins to appear.] She looked like she wanted to punch me in the stomach."
